- 21-year-old Babelyn Mukila made history on Saturday as the first ever deaf model to be crowned Miss Tourism Mombasa County
- She had competed in the previous edition without success, but vowed to not give up, just so she can show the world that disability is not inability
A 21-year-old beauty school student, who is also hearing impaired, was on Saturday evening May 28 crowned Miss Tourism Mombasa County.
The model, Babelyn Mukila, defied all odds to emerge winner during the function held at Rizfar Hair and Beauty College.
Mukila was second time lucky, having competed in the 2015 edition and emerged the first runner up, according to Mombasa-based Baraka FM.
The Mombasa Technical Training Institute student said she was elated that her dream to win in such a beauty pageant had come true, and that she could showcase to the world that disability is not inability.
Her friends and family, as well as the deaf community in the region were in attendance to cheer her on, and were equally excited when she emerged winner.
The glitzy event that was organised by Rizfar Hair and Beauty College in conjunction with other stakeholders attracted five entries.
Ruth Karimi, 25, took the 1st runners up position, while 24-year-old Patricia Maina was crowned the 2nd runners up.
Mukila will meet other finalists from the other 46 counties on Monday May 30 for a photoshoot in Nairobi.
