- Mutahi Ngunyi advertised jobs on his social media page but noted applicants with master's degrees from America, UK or Canada were the most preferred
- Kenyans criticised the political analyst, arguing he was demeaning graduates from local universities
- Ngunyi, however, said he did not have time to retrain graduates from local institutions like The University of Nairobi
- He suggested Moi University was even doing much better than UoN
Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has sparked a debate online after suggesting Moi University is more advanced in terms of offering quality training than The University of Nairobi (UoN).
Master's degrees from abroad
Ngunyi made the remark after a section of Kenyans sneered at an advert he made on his Twitter handle which sought to recruit junior researchers with Master's degree from European or American University.
To justify this move, the renowned political analyst said those who were criticising him did not understand the struggle of hiring and retraining "a graduate from The University of Nairobi".
The controversial and unapologetic professor claimed Moi University was even much better in terms of training, especially in Law programme.
"Some tweetists are annoyed that I asked for job applicants with degrees from UK, Canada and America. You have no idea how painful it is to employ and re-train a graduate from University of Nairobi!!! Moi University is superior, especially their Law prggramme," said Ngunyi.Reactions
The post attracted a lot of reactions with dozens of netizens disagreeing with his observation.
Elgeyo-Marakwet senator who is one of the vocal Law graduates from the University of Nairobi took a swipe at the political analyst, suggesting his problem was thinking UoN was owned by Deputy President William Ruto whom he dislikes.
"To my former Moi University School of Law students don’t be too excited. This one thinks that WSR owns Nairobi University," responded Murkomen. Some tasked Ngunyi to name some of the well-trained lawyers from Moi University who have done better and proved their superiority in the legal profession over their UoN counterparts.
However, there are those who agreed with Ngunyi's remarks that indeed UoN has lost its glory and many upcoming universities were doing better.
Top 10 rankings
The city-based university has severally been ranked as the best in the country and among top 10 centres of academic excellence in Africa.
In the latest ranking by the African Exponent, UoN was ranked the seventh best university in Africa.
The ranking was based on academic prestige, scholarly excellence and intellectual horsepower.
Another research firm, Webometrics Ranking, listed UoN as the best institution of higher learning in East Africa and 10th in Africa.
Moi and Kenyatta universities have been trailing UoN, according to studies that have been documented.
