Dolly Parton has said no to a statue in her honour.

The legendary US singer took to social media recently to share a statement where she addressed the Tennessee legislature.

The state legislature was considering a bill to erect a statue of the music icon on the Capitol grounds.

The star declined the offer due to the ongoing pandemic.

In the statement she posted on Twitter on Thursday, 18 February, Dolly said:

"I am honoured and humbled by their intention but I have asked the leaders of the state legislature to remove the bill from any and all consideration. Given all that is going on in the world, I don't think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time."

"The timing may not be right but the idea is justified because of all the philanthropy work that you’ve done. And what speaks to your character is that you’ve never bragged about it and you put the focus on the work. That’s why you’re an American treasure."

"With all due respect, it’s difficult to think of a private American citizen who has contributed more to our culture, well-being, and decency than @DollyParton. If she’s not deserving of a statue on the Capitol grounds, I suggest maybe putting her face on the Statue of Liberty?"
