A section of Safaricom subscribers were puzzled after receiving an odd text message reading "text" from the telecommunications giant through a 44444 short code.

The telco in response to the Monday, February 22, message said it came as a result of a system error but the issue was being fixed.

Later in the day, the company issued an apology imploring its customers to ignore the message as it was erroneously sent.

"Dear customer, Safaricom would like to sincerely apologise for earlier sending you a text message in error. Kindly ignore it. Thank you," the company said.

Reactions

Safaricom users who received the text had trooped to social media to express their concerns. Below were some of the reactions sampled by TUKO.co.ke:
