Transport activities along Migori-Homa Bay highway have been disrupted after the Oria-Riat bridge on River Kuja collapsed due to heavy rains currently experienced in the region.

Oria-Riat bridge collapsed with a cane trailer transporting sugarcane to Sukari Industry in Riat trading centre.

Ndhiwa sub-county police commander Robert Aboki divulged that the driver was rescued, adding that he sustained slight injuries.

"We were able to rescue the driver and take him to the hospital; he only suffered slight injury," Aboki said.

Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino urged road users to exercise caution and patience as he engages relevant government stakeholders on a temporary pass to ease movement.

On Tuesday, May 11, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) warned motorists that the Bondo-Usenge-Osieko road had been cut off.

“Since there is no alternative access to Osieko, we wish to advise motorists along that section not to attempt crossing the over-topped section and only to cross when water levels are low,” KeNHA said.

According to South Kanyikela location chief Moses Ongonga, the bridge, which has lasted for more than 40 years, was meant for pedestrians and light vehicles but not heavy traffic.

The administrator stated that pupils from the Oria area have also been using the bridge to cross over to Otange Primary and Minyere Primary School in Ndhiwa, saying that learning was also paralysed in those institutions.

In a related story, TUKO.co.ke reported that learning was paralysed in five public schools in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay county, after Riana Bridge collapsed following a heavy downpour in the area.
