Michael Bolton On the Power of 'When a Man Loves a Woman'

I probably started hearing “When a Man Loves a Woman” around the time Percy Sledge originally recorded it, in 1966. The song has a specific format in that the first line starts right away with the chorus (what we call “the hook”) rather than the verse. So the title hits you right off the top. In Hit Songwriting 101, you learn that there is a craft of writing pop music where you tell a bit of a story, but then you quickly get to the chorus.

Protesters Storm APC National Secretariat, Demand Jonathan's Adoption As Consensus Candidate

Some protesters on Friday stormed the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja to demand the adoption of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s consensus candidate. Recall that a Northern group had purchased the N100 million nomination and expression of interest forms of the ruling party for Jonathan. Jonathan, however, distanced himself from the form of the ruling party, stating that it was gotten without his knowledge. The plan to field Jonathan was reportedly started in 2020 by the Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, with plans for the former leader to serve one term while power returns to the North.
