European football governing body, UEFA is set to take a decision on the probability of moving this year’s champions league final which was to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia to another venue.
This follows Thursday’s decision by Russia to attack Ukraine.
UEFA executive committee will hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday to discuss the geopolitical crisis along with fixtures out of Russia
UEFA revealed the latest update in a statement which reads: “Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee …. in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions.”
The British government and fan groups had asked that the game be moved from Petersburg stadium which is sponsored by Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom.
In related news, China has called for restraint on all sides after Russian President, Vladimir Putin ordered an attack on Ukraine on Thursday, 24 February.
